For many individuals with disabilities, maintaining independence at home is a priority. One such individual has benefited from Live-in Care, allowing them to stay in their own home rather than moving into a care facility. In this blog, they share their journey, experiences, and how live-in carers have positively impacted their life.
A Decade of Support
This individual has has asked to remain anonymous, they have been receiving Live-in Care from Access Care for around ten years. Before that, they were more independent and relied on hourly carers for assistance. However, as their needs increased, they realised that Live-in Care was the best option to ensure they received the support required while continuing to live in their own space.
Understanding Their Condition
They have scoliosis and trunk deformities, conditions that have led to full dependence on a wheelchair. Due to these mobility challenges, they require assistance with daily tasks, personal care, and overall well-being.
Welcoming a Carer into Their Home
For many, the thought of having someone live with them full-time can be daunting. However, they had a different perspective: “I looked at it as if I didn’t have a live-in carer, I would have to go into a care home, which I definitely didn’t want to do. So, I was happy to have someone living with me.”
The Role of Live-in Carers
Their carers provide comprehensive support, including:
• Personal Care: Assisting with washing, dressing, and general hygiene needs. Due to mobility limitations, another agency also helps with this as they require hoisting.
• Medication Management: Ensuring medications are taken correctly and on time.
• Household Tasks: Helping with housekeeping, laundry, and meal preparation.
• Grocery Shopping & Cooking: Shopping together, with carers taking on the cooking responsibilities.
• Appointments & Outings: Assisting in attending medical appointments and, when the weather allows, going out for walks together.
Building Meaningful Relationships
They have two regular carers who work on a rotation basis. One carer has been with them for several years, as has the other. Their long-term commitment has allowed them to build a strong bond. “It’s going really well, and we have a good relationship. They know me well. Sometimes we have little disagreements, but nothing serious—it soon blows over.”
A Positive Experience
Overall, they are very happy with the support they receive. Live-in Care has allowed them to maintain independence while ensuring their daily needs are met. The familiarity of having consistent carers has provided stability and comfort in their life.
