Connecting Elderly Grandparents With Family

We're sharing our top tips on how to connect elderly grandparents with their family this Christmas - wherever in the world they may be!

Many of us have started thinking about the festive season, and started to make plans where we will be and what we will do at Christmas. Some families gather together, others take the opportunity to escape to a warmer climate - whatever you decide to do, it's always lovely to catch up with relatives be this face to face, or from a screen.

Since the pandemic hit, we have all gotten a little more used to being on camera - however it can still be hard for the elderly to get to grips with an iPad kitted out with Skype, Zoom, or FaceTime. The positive outcome is that these gadgets and apps can connect us and allow us the time to catch up - wherever in the world we are.

If you're spending time away from your elderly loved ones this year, why not arrange a video call?

  1. Pick an easy to use platform - FaceTime which is built in to iPads and iPhone is easy to operate and works pretty much like a phone call. So if your elderly loved on is used to making calls on an iPhone, we suggest trying FaceTime first. Here is a video showing you how to use FaceTime: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TXLZ-egtIe0 Some other platforms include WhatsApp, Skype, or Zoom.

  2. Practice in advance. To avoid frustrations on the day, have a couple of practice go's when you are around your elderly family member and smooth out anything which isn't clear. Our livein carers can assist you with this.

  3. Schedule a time so everyone knows when you're calling!

  4. Teach your family member to prop up their phone so they're not holding it. The video will be still and the image will be better if the phone/tablet stays in one place.

  5. Have fun! Make the video call fun - during the pandemic, our team used video calls to connect with loved ones and family to enjoy games night together, celebrate birthdays/festivities, show new additions to the family. There is so much you can do - why not sing carols or play a host a quiz?

Technology doesn't have to be intimidating to your elderly family members - it just takes a little preparation in order to enjoy each other's company and have fun, wherever we are.

Our Live-in Carers offer companionship care to their elderly Clients and often help them make video calls to friends and family, as well as enjoy festive activities together, go to appointments, cook homemade meals, and make festive decorations together.
