At Access Care, we have over 30 years of experience providing the very best home care services to our lovely clients, past and present, many of whom are elderly.
With World Senior Citizens Day around the corner on August 21st, we couldn't think of a better time to celebrate the elderly members of our community.
This special day is not only about showing our appreciation but also about making our elderly loved ones feel cherished and included.
In this next post, we will be sharing some lovely ideas on how you can make this day memorable for your home care clients or loved ones.
How to Celebrate World Senior Citizens Day with Your Home Care Client
World Senior Citizens Day is an ideal opportunity to make your elderly live-in care clients or loved ones feel special.
Here are some delightful activities that can brighten their day:
Afternoon Tea at Home with your Home Care Client
What better excuse to put on a cosy afternoon tea than a special celebration? Prepare a delicious spread with sandwiches, scones, and here is a favourite recipe of our’s for Eton Mess:
Eton Mess Recipe
Ingredients:
4 meringue nests
300ml double cream
400g strawberries, hulled and chopped
2 tbsp icing sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract
Instructions:
Whip the double cream until soft peaks form. Add the icing sugar and vanilla extract.
Crush the meringue nests into bite-sized pieces and gently fold them into the whipped cream.
Layer the cream mixture with chopped strawberries in serving glasses. Serve immediately.
Afternoon tea provides a calm setting for meaningful conversations and shared memories with your live-in care client.
Go for a Walk Around the Garden or Park
If your live-in care client or loved one is mobile, enjoying a nice leisurely walk in the garden or a nearby park can be a refreshing experience. Fresh air, the serenity of nature, and a gentle stroll can work wonders for their mental and physical health. Be sure to choose a path that is safe and accessible for your live-in care client.
Talk About Your Home Care Client's Past
A lovely way to spend time with your live-in care client is by listening to their stories from the past. Start up conversations about their past, their achievements, and their most cherished memories.
Listen to Music from Their Youth
Music has a magical power, it is able to transport us back to different times in our lives. Create a playlist of popular songs from your live-in care client's youth and enjoy a musical trip down memory lane. This activity can help to spark past memories.
Take a Trip to a Garden Centre
For those live-in care clients who can manage a short outing, a trip out to a garden centre can be a great way to spend an afternoon. The vibrant flowers, plants, and the serene atmosphere can be really uplifting. Plus, it's a great way to spend some quality time together with your live-in care client outside the usual home setting.
Watch a Classic Movie Together
Put on a classic film that your live-in care client or loved one might enjoy. Choose an old-school film that holds sentimental value or one from a time period that they fondly remember. You could also prepare some snacks like popcorn, set up comfortable seating, and create a movie theatre atmosphere at home.
For many live-in care clients, watching a classic movie can be a nostalgic experience, providing an opportunity to reminisce about the past and share favourite moments from the film.
This simple yet meaningful activity can create new memories while celebrating old ones.
Try Some Arts and Crafts
Having a go at some arts and crafts can be a great way to spend time together and tap into your live-in care client's creativity. Set up a simple craft project that is suitable for their abilities, making greeting cards, painting, or knitting are all popular ideas with our live-in carers. Not only will the activity be enjoyable, but it can also be a way for your live-in care client to express themselves and maybe discover or rekindle a passion for a particular type of craft.

How a Live-in Carer Can Help an Elderly Person
A live-in carer can make a big difference in the life of an elderly person. Here's how:
Personalised Home Care
Our live-in carers provide one-on-one live-in care tailored to the unique needs of each live-in care client. This helps to make sure that all their health, nutritional, and emotional needs are met.
Companion Care
Loneliness can be a major issue for the elderly. A live-in carer can offer companion care and emotional support, helping to reduce feelings of isolation.
Household Assistance
From cooking delicious and nutritious meals to ensuring the house is clean and safe, live-in carers assist with all the daily household tasks. This helps the client to keep their independence while receiving the support they need.
